Surrounded by the lush landscapes of England’s beautiful countryside, Oxford city is world famous for its University and historical significance: although evidence has been unearthed of habitation in this area from thousands of years ago, in the last eight hundred years, it has been home to some of the finest scholars England has ever produced. Whilst the city is characterised by its ancient buildings and cobbled streets however, it is also a vibrant and cosmopolitan centre due to its wonderful array of shopping opportunities, and independent cafes and restaurants.
The Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums offer a truly wonderful experience respectively, exhibiting ancient artifacts from around the globe: from the shrunken heads of bygone tribes to internationally renowned exhibitions of Egyptian antiquities, you can travel through time - and around the world - in just a morning’s leisurely stroll. Founded in 1683 and refurbished in 2009, the Ashmolean Museum was the first ever to open to the public, but both museums are continually undergoing redevelopments to produce some of the finest archaeological and anthropological displays that England has to offer. Only a short walk away is Oxford University’s Museum of Natural History, where you’ll be in awe at the zoological collections: comprising more than 250,000 specimens, they represent a wide range of extinct and endangered species - including the most intact Dodo skeleton in the world - and house many of Charles Darwin’s own collections.
After sampling the historical side of Oxford, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the city’s extensive list of pubs and bars; if you want to carry on with the cultural spoils after a relaxing drink or al fresco dinner however, you can see a play at the city’s Sheldonian Theatre on Broad Street, or enjoy the oldest botanic garden in Britain. With newly built displays and dating back to 1621, the University of Oxford Botanic Garden is just one of the places you can visit on a tour of the city. There a wide and unusual range of tours available, whether you want to trace the steps of Oxford graduate writers C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien with a literary tour, or spot the delights of stone carving on a gargoyles and grotesques tour. You can even see the sites at which the scenes of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry films, from the famous Harry Potter films, were shot.
